Our itinerary starts with the bizarre architectures in the Coppedé district, a nice example of late Art Nouveau (called Liberty Style in Italian) and ends at the extravagant Casina delle Civette in Villa Torlonia, where architecture and decorative elements live together in a perfect harmony. In the Coppedè district you will enjoy an unusual mix of ancient Greek, ancient Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Manieristic, Baroque and, overall, Art Nouveau mishmash that was created by the Florentine architect and sculptor Coppedè (from whom the quarter itself takes its name) in the early 1900s. Thanks to this unusual beauty, the quartiere Coppedé has been the setting for a number of films, and it is an interesting opportunity to leave the beaten path of Rome sightseeing.
Within a short walking distance is Villa Torlonia. With its winding paths and imaginative exotic buildings this villa represents one of the very few examples of “English-style” garden in Rome. You will visit the Casina delle Civette (House of the Owls), which was the residence of Prince Giovanni Torlonia. The motif of the owl is used almost obsessively in the decorations and furnishings of the house, at the wish of Prince Giovanni, a mysterious man who loved esoteric symbols.
